    Linux and partitions

A question relating to Linux and OS / data partitions.

If I have Linux installed on a HDD, with the OS in its own partition and my data in another partition, would it be possible to replace the OS with another flavour of Linux and still have access to my data partition with the newly installed OS?

presumably by data partition you mean /home?

the answer is "yes, but...", there you may have problems moving to older versions of applications (your comfig files etc may object)

Maybe an example would explain the scenario better.

I install Debian onto a HDD and create two partitions - one for the OS and the other for dumping lots of audio files.

I then decide that Debian sucks and want to try Gentoo.

Can I remove Debian and install Gentoo on the partition that Debian was on and continue to have access to my audio files (in the other partition)?

.. or is my understanding of Linux/filesystems/partitions a bit screwed up?!

    same model as windows

if you have a c: drive with windows on and a d: drive with a load of mp3's - can you reinstall windows 2000 on the c: driver or do an update to xp without touching the d: drive....yes.
    It is Inevitable.....
