is their any other 64 bit OS's other than xp64 ?

Linux has a 64 bit version: http://librenix.com/?inode=4885
i assuming you mean x86 OSes.
Plenty of 64-bit versions of linux and BSD. Most every major distrobution has a 64-bit version.
you can get solaris X86 for AMD64 which is 64bit, although it is a little poor and is still quite young so has a few bugs and issues.
It is Inevitable.....
by 64 bit, presumably you mean amd64 and em64t (i.e. extended x86 arches). 64 bit chips & oses have been around for YEARS (alpha, sparc, whatever)
anyway, your choices are (give or take):
windows xp x64 edition
windows server 2003 x64 edition
about 100 linux distributions
solaris 10
net, free, and openbsd (and possibly derrivatives like dragonflybsd or pcbsd, too lazy to check)
linux and bsd has been well-established on amd64 for a couple of years - amd used linux with an amd64 build of ut200x to showcase amd64 as a gaming platform, back before release. the first public release of nvidia 3d drivers for amd64 linux was the 2004 new year.
Quick question, if there are performance boosts from using a 64bit version of linux, would it be worth dual booting 32 and 64 bit versions of linux on an AMD64 for example? 32 for gazillions of pre-compiled progs and 64 for the performance when your software can support it.
Cheers, Andrew.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.
this is a bit of a pet hate of mine.
for most parts the desktop user will not really benifit from a 64 bit build. over a 32, certianly ont at this point where software is pretty much written for 32 and just compiled 64 (as a very basic example)
I have a bi-arch system, simpley for compatablity because not everything works/is supported under 64 and unless I'm doing something that warrents 64 bit addressing there is no point.
It is Inevitable.....
but my point is as followsOriginally Posted by ikonia
, what is the point of getting a 64bit cpu if your only using it for 32bit programs ? (might as well stayed with the athlon xp)
not at all, the 64 bit AMD's will perform excellent in 32 bit mode the have more than just one feature (being 64 bit)
Plus for me, I do use it in 64 bit mode a fair bit for developing software, testing things and studying x86_64 comparisions so for me its a winner and a real good tool.
The average home user though will not benifit and it could even slow the performance (which is what everyone thinks they are going to get) more than using the cpu in 32 bit mode.
It is Inevitable.....
from what i have read around the net , it gives around 9-15% increase in performance in games like hl2 and farcry etc (not sure if true or not though)
An Athlon 64 is a FAR better 32-bit CPU than an Athlon XP.
This is my 5th A64. I don't care about the 64-bit capabilities in the slightest.
