I'm considerring having a play with Windows media centre edition, can anyone who's got it tell me wether its usable as a general workstation platform or not, as the pc it would be installed in would be used for a bit of for gaming and internet as well.
If not I can always go the dual boot route

MCE 2005 is really an application that runs on Windows XP. You launch it from the Start Menu. If you don't need it you just don't run it!

No need to dual boot. It will still record TV programs even when it's not running.

Really? I thought MCE was classed as an OS?

So if you put it on a HTPC in your front room, you still have to load windows, and then run MCE each time? Surely not... I thought it was basically like a new GUI for XP, so even though it still is XP, you didn't have a desktop of start bar, just the buttons and options etc in the GUI.

MCE Is XP Pro with an extra media center app on it. You dont have to use the media center app. So you can use it like normal XP. M$ clases it as a seperate os but its no really.

So every time you turn on the computer, you have to load up Windows, then run the MCE application? That would suck for people using TV's and remotes, rather than a mouse etc. Still, I suppose I could see it's benefits.

If you create a shortcut to the "media centre" and copy it into startup, by the time the computers loaded the media centre is loaded.

Alternatively, get the remote and press the green button when you need it on and standby it when not in use.

Ahh, fair enough. I haven't yet built a HTPC so haven't played around with these new systems.

Windows MCE2005 is fine for gaming.

I use it all the time for WoW, CS Source, HL2, EE2, Warhammer 40k, Brothers in arms, farcry etc and it runs just the same as windows XP Pro.

It does have support built in straight away for the creation of CD and DVD discs so you can use windows to burn back music discs etc.

It just has the fancy menu system when you press the green button to watch TV, Watch DVD, Listen to music, record TV via scheduling etc.

Bah - MCE currently has no support for Nebula Digitv and AiW's

There is a way to get AiW's working, but not worth it for me if digitv isn't supported yet

I bought a media centre pc here http://www.media-centre-pc.com and i use it as on a domain as well as play games on it and it works better than any pc i have had before. As said above the media centre part is just a program. However you can set it to start with windows so that you don't have to use a mouse and can use the remote control.
