    admin share drive mappings

    Hi all,

I've not really used window workgroups/domains scince the nt4 early days so apologies if this seems obvious.

I've done a few searches and according to what I'm reading this should just work.

    I've got 2 Windows XP Pc's in a workgroup

Both machines have the same administrator password (just out of chance really)

I'm trying to connect from machine a to machine b's root of the c drive.

now in nt 4 I just used to to

    net use j: \\machineb\c$ /user:administrator
type in the password for the remote machines administrator user and bang - j drive mapped

    I see

Enter the password for 'administrator' to connect to 'machineb':
    System error 5 has occurred.

    Access is denied.

I logged into machineb as administrator just to test the password - and it works no problem.

I tried with the right click "map network drive" options on my network places.

changed the connect as a different user to administrator and it accepts the password, then asks me to enter the user name for "machineb/guest"

    Not sure whats going on.

Windows guru's please put me on the path

no, c$ used to be the admin share and c$ d$ etc where automaticlly shared

the fact that I get prompted for a password suggests to me that it is finding the share.

I'm not really up on this though.

When Simple File Sharing is turned on, remote administration and remote registry editing does not work as expected from a remote computer, and connections to administrative shares (such as C$) do not work because all remote users authenticate as Guest. Guest accounts do not have administrative rights. When Simple File Sharing is turned on, if you configure specific user ACEs, remote users are not affected when Simple File Sharing is turned on because all remote users authenticate as Guest when Simple File Sharing is turned on.

Oh yes, from the days when friends of mine could create files on my desktop through a dial-up connection in Windows 95 due to file & printer sharing being enabled by default on any network connection

That was my first introduction to security, hehe.
