    I've exceeded my activations!

I'm always tinkering with my PCs: new motherboards, new processors, new graphics cards and bigger disks etc!

Along with the occasional need to totally delete my existing installation because it doesn't work anymore I have now got the message when I try to activate XP saying that the number of activations has been exceeded.

To continue to use the OS I need to telephone them and get a new activation key.

I have a legitimate copy but I just wondered how they were on the phone. Do they treat you like a criminal and ask all sorts of questions or do you just explain why it's happened and they give you the key?

    Has anyone done this?

    Thanks

    Dave

Have they changed it then? Last time I called I spoke to someone, they asked for the first 4 or 6 digits of my code they then gave me a new activation code no questions asked. Was quite happy considering it's an OEM version.

I have never had to activate my copy. And I have made loads of hardware changes over the years.

Thanks for all the replies. I can now update the thread!

I called the number and had to enter a 54 digit code. after that the computer (at the other end!) said the number could not be verified. I had the option to press "1" to speak to a CSR. I then got cut off!

It took me three attempts to finally get through to a human. She gave me a new code to enter and bingo! Activated again.

So no "Spanish Inquisition!!" (for those of you old enough to remember that!)

    Thanks again

    Dave
