secure remote desktop? x forwarding over ssh, mapi? why, there are other methods to do the same job.. you can make it work if you're willing to break a sweat.

MS 'skills' are over rated, you could train a chimpanze to follow all the wizards and dialoge boxes.

But this is from a users perspective they want an easy life without having to learn the finer points of xwindows. This allows them to do something called a job ( you have heard of one of those havn't you ? ) , the system just helps them to do that without require the loss of formative years. Outlook 2003 is a very good messaging client , and to use its full functionality you have to connect it via MAPI ( or RPC over https , but thats another thing you dont understand isn't it ) IMAP or POP3 just wont cut it.

chimps may use wizards , to really do something well with windows you still use the good old command line so again I sugest you take those blinkers off.

Have you tried to install RHEL recently ? it has more wizards than a server 2003 install.

there are MAPI based mail servers available for linux but they aren't up to much ( HP Openmail for example )

And openmail has been discontinued anyway, which is a shame since I was considering it as a possible replacement for Exchange.

    Break a sweat?

Sounds like a severe case of rose tinted glasses.

Wizards and dialogue boxes? you set up a FEBE exchange setup recently? Or RPC over HTTPS?

I love SBS (as much as one can love a Windows OS).

Barclays used to run it and it wasn't really up to much tbh. I've had a play with a couple of alternative mail servers and havn't found anything as good as exchange ( mainly as its the only one with a truely dedicated client )

Have you looked at lotus notes? Though the client isn't really a dedicated email client (it may appear so at first though) its capable of a lot more than you would think. We still use it as a front end to a lot of databases, aswell as getting our email!

*picks himself up off the floor*

    please dont swear

Hopefully the notes R6 client is ok , because lets face it , there was room for a LOT of improovement over R5

its also prety expensive unless you use domino server for datbase work as well ?

it has a couple of nice features , but I found it a bit"clunky" for my liking - everthing seemed to be counter intuitive though I think its quite a nice DB front end (nicer than access anyway , which isn't saying much )

What is it with sissy admins who are afraid of learning things and doing hard work?
I knew someone that thought like that. After completely fcuking up about 10 SMB's it infrastructures with it and ending up costing them many times the cost of a nice SBS box, yet still insisting that he was a linux god and that linux was better for running windos based networks than windows, I cant take anyone that suggests anything like that seriously.
