I work as a Systems Administrator for a small healthcare company. I'm running a native 2003 Windows domain. My network is great and fucntions as well could hope (always room for improvement). With that said, I'm looking for creative ways to integrate Linux into my domain or my home. Not for any anti-Microsoft reason, but only to improve my skills on the OS to keep myself a strong Admin.
At work I have DNS and DHCP running on one of my DC's. I prefer to leave it this way because Active Directory is much easier to troubleshoot and configure when you have DNS on a DC. Bind would be cool, but like I said things are better the way they are here. I can't use Linux as an apps server because my companies core business apps require Windows. We also have our printers shared from these servers, because our custom Billing software requires certain HP print drivers that our desktops ( XP ) must have for work. I have deployed my own linux firewall behind the company's router for security. I use Knoppix STD for tools when needed ,but my workstation needs to be XP so I can work on our Windows group policy. I also have an FTP server running an old version of Mandrake. It's been up and functiong trouble free for 3 years. What else can I do here to add some Linux guys?
At home I just finished building my new AMD 64 rig. I'm running XP Media Center 2005 on it. I have two older machine, my XP 2400+ and a Celeron 1.8ghz pc. My mom is getting the Celeron because she has never had a PC!
Now I play alot of games and I really want to get the Home theater PC thing going so I want Windows here. I don't think I'm going to use my new AMD 64 machine as the hub however; I want to use my old XP 2400+ to host my mp3's, files and any movies and photos I may archive. This does not leave alot of room for Linux at home either. For everything that I will use on an everyday basis at home the Windows MCE2005 things just seems to fit better. I love Linux for the tools, but I'm not into capturing packets and running brute force tools 24/7 anymore.
What can I do? I need more Linux in my life, but I am actually enjoying all that the Microsoft world has to offer.I have not even dipped my foot into XP64 yet. My income comes from computers so I need to get and keep my Linux skills sharp, but how????
