For Web Developers RE: Hosting Providers

I'm looking for a provider that will host various websites for me, they must have excellent support - technical and otherwise, they must not have any downtime, and they must generally be very very very good. Support for various server-side technolgoies is a must, at a minimum PERL CGI, PHP and MySQL.

I'd like to see some suggestions from people who develop websites for commerce applications (or people who "know what they're talking 'bout" at a minimum ).

    Cheers

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

That will never happen, so look for the ones that have the least downtime, and more importantly, get things back up and running as quickly as possible when there is downtime.

Yea that's pretty much what I meant when I said never, I just couldn't be arsed to type all that.

I highly recommend Fluid Hosting I've used them for the past two odd years and they've never let me down. Not cheap but worth every penny.

I expect if you are really that hardcore about it then you will have to pay for it.

I say go for one of the cheapo ones like dream-hosting.co.uk ot hosting-unlimited
and if they arnt good enough you havet really spent that much on it and try something
more expensive. You never know you might be satisfied with them.

I've used various hosting companies from small to very Large projects, not all web based, but hosted.

I've found that "public available" hosting is limited to either rackspace for your own server or the renting of a managed server build, which although the managed server will be fully supported its only fully supported in the standard build configuration, the more you move away the less the support you'll get.

For "user" projects for small companies I've found the purchase of a correclty sized server and simpley renting reliable data center space the best solution for small business projects, thus you can configure the server %100 to your needs, and as long as its not a development type project as long as you have power and network configuration it should never break.

For the larger style projects, you normally find that companies don't use hosting companies they take the hosting from the company providing the solution or have their own area in a datacenter, so for example a major financial app that is being given to sun to run, would be hosted in either the banks own datacenter or suns, they wouldn't take it to a 3rd party hosting company.

for user projects, I've found servercity.co.uk to do a good price on rack space rental and they seem to have good connectivity and backup system (0 outage during the bombing for example) you'll find that most of the hosting companies do not really cater for custom projects they are for really small 1 - 10 man business with simple sites, the real businesses use their own kit in rented server space, and the big companies use their own data centers.

With this in mind most of the peoples recommendations on here will be based on smaller projects, so depending on what you want you may want to consider corperate style config, or co-locatiing your own server.
    It is Inevitable.....
