    Microsoft XP 64 feedback required

Hi after the best part of 4 days getting XP on my new machine I am now considering purchasing the XP 64bit O/S to get the best from the Athlon 64.

The first question is it worth upgrading to?

Are you having trouble getting 64bit drivers for you hardware.

How stable is it on your machine.

Is there anything to be away of before I take the plunge!

    Thanks Guys!

    1. Not really. See #4.

    2. Good 64-bit drivers exist for all of my hardware.

    3. At least as stable as 32-bit XP and 2000.

    4. Calling microsoft and getting people who speak english with a thick Hindi accent and having them read you some huge activation number is a bitch.

annoyance 1: some drivers are still missing (anything that connects via USB that isn't a keyboard/mouse; wireless things)

annoyance 2: many games won't install (hackable, but irritating)

annoyance 4: some of the drivers are ass (e.g. hl2 sound is buggered, provided broadcom gige driver doesn;t work)

Depends what you expect to achieve from it...
Do you need 64-bit for something?
Do you think it will perform faster? (probably not)
Do you think it will be more stable than 32-bit XP? (probably)
Do you think it requires less post-RTM patches that 32-bit XP? (yes, at RTM it was patched to the same level as 2003 SP1)

Only the onboard chipset for my Pavilion machine, HP claim that they are working on some now.
However, the OS does have working drivers for everything on my rig (in fact the only thing Windows did not have a built-in driver for was the onboard AC'97 sound chipset).

    Rock solid so far.

Check your hardware beforehand and check the manufacturer's sites for drivers, then look for "horror stories" from other people with that hardware.
Check your applications, do they all run happily under 64-bit XP or even have a 64-bit native version available?

    Thanks guys!
Theres plenty of thing to think about here.
It may be worth hanging on a little long before I take the plung.
I have a couple of spare drives I may see if I can get a demo copy and see what issues I get before I shell out for the official one.

see the earlier posts on the issues you may have!

the offer is just to get more enthusiasts onto x64 - enthusiasts are noisy consumers of large volumes of hardware, they can kick up a fuss & scream & shour manufacturers into releasing xp64 drivers sooner

Well chaps got the trial version on and working and............. I can tell the difference! The machine seems quicker but applications seem smoother too.
I am comparing the machine agains't a fresh XP install on the same machine. Just been out to purchase Far Cry, going to install it on both O/S's to see how that works out.

    Will report back!
