system won't boot from new S-ATA hard disk...

I got a Raptor the other day, installed it in my machine and used Norton Ghost to clone my current C drive to a new partition on the Raptor. Swapped the drives round in the BIOS so the machine would boot from the new one but it didn't.

I can't remember the exact error message but it was something like "boot media not valid. Please insert valid boot media and hit a key to try again". I never seen that from XP before so I think it's a BIOS message.

I knew it wasn't going to as the ghost process wouldn't copy the MBR and other bootblock type things so I went into the XP Pro Recovery Console from the setup disk and did a fixmbr and fixboot on the new drive. I thought this would sort it out but apparently not. Anyone got an idea what else to do? I have sorted something like this before by installing XP on the new partition then ghosting it back from the normal one so I guess there's somethign that the actual XP install process does that the recovery console's fixboot and fixmbr don't. Divine inspiration please, on the back of a postcard to the usual address... :)

Was your old drive PATA & is this on your ASUS A8V Deluxe?
If so you need a driver for the SATA controller but your old Windows install on IDE wouldn't have i.e. you need to work out how to get the SATA controller driver into your current OS

Probably time for a freesh install really. Not worth the hastle imo.

I'd just about finished reinstalling everything before I decided to buy the new drive so I'm keen to avoid that if at all possible.

The new drive obviously is SATA yes and the old ones are EIDE. However the motherboard has an additional Promise SATA378 controller which has 2 EIDE ports, both the Raptor and the original EIDEs are on the promise controller. There is only one driver for it, no distinction between the PATA and SATA elements of the controller. This is why I'm thinking it's more likely to be a bootblock issue or similar.
