    Is it safe...

I was wondering if it were a good time to install Serivicepack 2 for Windows XP Pro, as when I received it from Microsoft, there was a lot of talk about SP2 stopping lots of programs and most important of all, games from working.

Is it safe to dive in??

It's more than safe, I'd say it was essential. The only thing which MIGHT interfere with games is the Windows XP firewall, but you can exclude programs or ports from being blocked, so while it might be inconvenient in the short term, the benefits more than outweigh that.

I've never had a problem with it. If you've never tried it, I suggest you put it on ASAP.

A firewall does me. Besides I've got nothing important on it.
    clever.

there are more than security updates in service packs.

for example, you can't handle drives over 127Gb in XP or 2000 without SP1 and SP3 respectively.
