    Basic free simple Linux

    Am I asking too much?

I jusyt built my new pc so thought i would try linux on the old one as it does not really have to power to run xp.

    Its a Dell 8100 P4 1.7 256RAM 60GB HDD.

I have Run a few live cds and they seem to work.

All i need it for is Open Office, internet and mabe play a few mp3s now and then.

It also must be able to share files with the other pc on the network and a shared printer on the network would be good.

I just want something undemanding of the system so it does not run so bloody slow.

    So what distro?

a P4 1.7 should have more than enough oomph for XP, I run it on a P3 550 and its fine, a bit more ram would make a world of difference though.

if you want to go the linux route visit www.debian.org and get a sarge i386 set, the first 2 discs should be more than sufficient.

    mandrake is noob friendly
why not try a harddisk install of a live cd? I know knoppix (probably the most widely known/used live cd) has an option for it.

But yeah just add another 256mb chip of ram for under £30 probably and you'll be fine with XP

Its easily good enough for XP

256 RAM is more than adaquete to run XP for what you want it - just make sure you manage services properly (which you should do anyway).

urghhhhhh, where is the misconcerption that virus's and spyware don't affect linux come from.

ok - so there are fewer but if you don't administer a system you'll still get hit with things
    It is Inevitable.....
