    rdbms layout/modeler/design tool

    hello all,

I'm looking for a tool that will let me do rdbms layout design / display so that I can share the layouts, keys, relationships with other developers.

I think access has something built in (no good to me) and I know Oracle has a tools set which is not accessable to me at the moment.

Does anyone had a recommendation of a good toolset. something that will allow you to design tables and such and display them in a simple visual form so that everyone has a clear understanding.

    thanks.

Visio will do what you want, only the very latest version will let you create a schema creation script but the older versions will let you reverse engineer an schema into a ER diagram. Its lower budget than an oracle license but still costs so dont know if it helps.

btw you can install oracle for free on linux for non commercial uses i think but only on supported distributions such as redhat and suse (as i discovered after trying and failing to install it on ubuntu).

good advice all, I'm not sure viso allows database design, or I've at least seen no options for it.

I'm all for paying for a product just reasonable ammount for reasonable products, and I can't justify the expense of say CA's offering (3k)

the Oracle stuff is fine on linux and I've got/had it running in the past.

I think the design tools are a seperate product though, I'm not aware of them coming with the rdbms.

Try googling for visual paradigm. I've only used their UML tools but they may offer a dbms application, and their software is very very good.

    trying now, excellent call.

they have some good looking stuff there. Could work.

Any other options why I evaluate.

I'm surprised the mysql and postgres groups don't have anything.

visio does allow database designs i've been using it for just that over the last couple of weeks.
couldnt tell you what type of diagram to choose though without having it in front of me (i use it at work).

    well for the record.

    I'm evaluating this,

    http://www.casestudio.com/enu/products.aspx

looks very well priced and a lot of functionality. The "lite" version also looks good value.

thats not bad at all, pretty much in the same slot as redputty suggested with visio.

Good old gnome having a good application. Its nice to have an alternate to the casestudio2 product, as that is really quite good and well priced, however it is only available on windows platforms which is a pain.

    good find suryad
