personally, i use mplayer (compiled with GUI). some reasonable alternatives include totem (gnome) or kaffeine (kde), or even realplayer for a fair amount of content.

your distribution ought to offer at least one player, usually xine.

one thing to remember though, many codecs (quicktime especially) are windows-only, so you'll need a bunch of windows codecs - try downloading a codec pack from mplayerhq.hu, and extracting to /usr/lib/win32

yup, mplayer is brilliant, esspecially if you want to use 'unusual' containers or codecs, like mkv or the new h.264 codec.

VLC is also quite nice, but can't cope with some codecs like wmv, and can be a pain to get to fullscreen properly. It has a much nicer gui than mplayer though.

    yes, "uncompressed quicktime videos".

absolutely sweet **** all uses uncompressed quicktime video.

the most populat quicktime codec is still sorrenson3, a decidedly closed-source codec, which WILL neccessitate use of windows codecs.
