Longhorn restricts content sent to your monitor...

    Slashdot

Is it me or does that seem a ridiculous idea?

    Thoughts?

Surely this is some wind up.
No, it's basically there to satisfy the MPAA and broadcast networks; I don't think MS want it as such, but I think they're throwing it out as a sop to the entertainment moghuls.

That is ludicrous!.. Damn Micro$oft definately want to *try* and run our lives don't they!.. An alternative operating system is looking evenmore attractive!..

But I guess the 1337 H@cK3rs will be on the case when it's released!.

Like when XP was released it was awfully buggy, and I am so glad I didn't get it until years after it's first release, and into when the first service pack was created. So I'm taking a wild guess and thinking that LongHorn may just be the same.

wtf? That is so stupid. Goodbye longhorn... wasn't greatly planning to use it anyway though. Why don't MS put people in forums to see people's reaction to stuff?

AFAIK the "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection" is implented as part of the graphics card and NOT the monitor.

IIRC Intel and ATI have said they are implementing it. Dont know if it will be driver or hardware.

I wont be upgrading to any window version which restricts open formats like AVI and MPG. However I understand this protection will be part of DRM supported format like WMV which I refuse to use anyway if it has DRM.

Things like this are why people illegally download mp3's rather than buy DRM'ed WMA versions online. The quality of WMA is probably worse for a start (becuase they will put it in the lowest bitrate possible).
You cant really buy CD's anymore and expect them to rip to MP3 because some have been made unreadable by pc drives.

I think ms is going ott with something 99% of people dont want or wouldnt want if they understood what it is and what it means. I only hope your average person doesnt buy into this crap thinking its the way forward.

I really think this will increase piracy because people are not going to want content that has these restrictions on it.

People, stop acting like this is going to stop you watching your downloaded Divx movies. This is to provide a secure path from a DRMed movie file to your screen, making it impossible to record the movie onto something like a DVD recorder.

This is being implemented by Microsoft because they have to do it, otherwise there will be no iTunes-for-films on Windows any time soon. You are deluded if you think Apple aren't going to do the same thing.

Using Linux will only remove the ability for you to watch these DRMed files, it won't let you be some kind of warez god.

All this DRM stuff is only going to work once they stop producing DVDs.
