As he said, w3schools is where i learnt years ago, well documented. And yup, there is notepad2.exe if you want to be adventurous, i prefer standard old notepad

On Windows, I recommend Crimson Editor - it has tabs and syntax highlighting, so it makes it slightly easier.

Dreamweaver MX is brillaint IMO, but for quick changes notepad does the job.

Unis recommend programs because they are either cheap, free or endorsed. Frontpage users should be slapped.

I hate frontpage with a passion, used it once years ago and realised how utterly crap it was

it's a good idea to use notepad while you learn the basic language then try to make a simple one without and help from any sources using only your mind and a keyboard

dreamweaver is a good program to use, although many n00b's who know nothing about html, xml, java, css, php, asp, perl,vb e.c.t use too

I'd Reccomend HTML-Kit from Chami as an editor, syntax highlighting, built in previewing prettifying and compliance checks, also has clicky buttons to do things, kind of like the editing box here, but less annoying

Any syntax hightlighting text editor is good - dreamweaver is excellent but allows the user to create garbage.

Personally I spend 6hours a day stairing at dreamweavers code page so I know that it has problems but generally is ok.
