MS after the pirates, possible cheap XP?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4717417.stm

The usual bit about the evil pirates costing poor Bill billion$, but insentive to get a proper version see below

Customers who discover that their copy of Windows is pirated have two options.

They can get a free version of Windows if they fill out a counterfeit report identifying the source of the software, providing proof of purchase and returning the counterfeit CD.

If they are unable to provide all the information, filling out a report will entitle them to receive a copy of Windows XP Home Edition for the reduced price of £56 or Windows XP Professional Edition for £86.

Or goto the Indian area and pick up a legit copy for cheap.

Btw, if anyone is a student, get MSDNAA, you'll get XP for FREE and its legit

So if I wanted a second windows cd I could fill in the report saying, source = me, and then I would send them the newly burnt disk.

Basicly if you have a computing department at your place of education (this is normally limited to Universities in the UK) go and ask them about MSDNAA.

They should give you the details of the co-ordinater who can give you a unique username and password to access the MSDNAA (MicroSoft Developers Network Academic Alliance) where you can download athe bulk of their software for free or pay cheap to get it sent.

yeah ive got my XP through MSDNAA, its great

You download and burn the ISO, and they email you a legit CD key that you can use to activate windows online etc

Same kinda thing for VS.NET2003, some office apps, loads of SDKs

becomes illegal after we leave uni though so would need to buy replacements tehn ;/ but heh i should be able to afford it then

Microsoft is also filtering out the many people who have hacked keys via their new Genuine Windows Validation system when you get updates. You can still get updates manually tho. Although it has already been hacked by an Indian.

Thast for free replacement, for a cheap one as specified in the thread title you dont need all the details, or hopefully a receipt. The free replacement scheme is aimed at people who have purchased a copy of xp that turns out to be dodgy, the pay for one appears to be aimed at evil people who just use a pirate copy because its free.

Personally, I think MS is trying to target the people who pirate willingly here, and not Joe Blogs who's been ripped off by his local PC dealer.
These people won’t pay the full RRP for windows, so by offering them a cheaper version I guess MS are hoping that they will purchase that. I’m highly doubtful it will work though

Ones that sell them as legit copies to make it seem less dodgy?
