    Which linux distro/apps?

Iv'e recently bought a new box which i intend to install linux on.

The box has half a terabyte of space and intention was to use it as a fileserver for the rest of my home network.

I will need to be able to get remote admin into it from my windows pcs, is there any remote admin programs which will allow me to visually control the other pc rather then using software like SSH, telnet etc.

Also i will do a bit of downloading on the box from newsgroup servers, anyone know any good linux clients for this sort of thing?

Also i will be setting the box up to share files with the rest of my network any prefered distros for this sort of thing?

    Cheers,

    Eddie

VNC aps will let you use the GUI. SSH will let you use just the terminal.

distro = your choice - there are tons of threads on here with people saying "what distro" choose one that meets your needs, do a little research. Keep in mind the spec of the hardware your running, and what you want the PC to do.

Applications, remote managment, well you can use any sort of Windows based X server such as PCXware, or Humming Bird Exceed, or IBM Reflection X to connect to a remote X server allowing you the desktop access, or you could run VNC for a full remote desktop connection.

Newsgroups news downloading, a few ways you can do this, just use a news client such as thunderbird, Knews and read it through your X/VNC connection. Or you could setup a local news spool using something like leafnode which makes your machine a local news server for configured channels.

Sharing the files, Samba is the obvious choice and is supported by pretty much every distro, so as I said above choose a distro you like, there are tons available. Have look through some of the older threads.
    It is Inevitable.....

You can run an X windows session over SSH .

Using PuTTY (ssh client) and Cygwin/X (X server port for windows) you should be able connect to a linux GUI from a windows machine.

EDIT Sorry didnt see your post Ikonia
