    VNC software

I just found out about the wonders of VNC using RealVNC, with this i can now build a slow quiet pc and sit it out of the way and leave it on as a file server and overnight downloaded, possibly turning it into a web/ftp server in the future without having to have another keyboard, mouse or monitor in the room

I have been wanting this type of thing for a while now, but i have only found the one program so far (realVNC) so i was wondering if there are any other good VNC programs, it has to be able to run on win98, xp and linux and not need to much system resources.

    THanks

    Ultr@VNC is pretty good too.
    TightVNC is allegidly more secure.

I personally find VNC a little slow for a lot of remote control. With windows boxes I'd use RDP or possibly dameware on the 98 boxes.

There are many other ways of controlling a linux box without xwindows so I dont know if its as needed.

I use Real VNC. Like Mody-Dick said, it is abit slow. It ussually takes 3 secs or so to load a menu (eg the start menu).

I have been running it over the wireless network in my house and i found it to be pretty rapid, but both computers are fast (over 2ghz) i wonder if that makes a difference, they are also both xp pro.

everything is going to factor into the speed

the client PC, the Server PC and the network connection.

No good having a dual AMD FX57 with 8 gig of ram on a gigabit network link to control if your client is a DX4 with 8 meg of ram running windows 3.11
    It is Inevitable.....

If the connection is slow just drop the color settings and possibly select the fuzzy screen option, should speed it up a bit. I used to use VNC over a SSL connection because it doesn't have any real security built in.

AFAIK you can run a linux xwindows session over an SSH connection to a windows machine using an SSH client like PuTTY and a windows X server like CygwinX but I dont know how easy it would be to set up .

VNC's OK, Ultr@VNC, TightVNC recommended versions

As already recommended the Ultr@VNC and TightVNC versions are probably the best 2 versions of VNC around.
VNC's got some nice cross-platform functionality, but it is slow compared to a Remote Desktop connection (Windows) or NX (Linux). PCAnywhere is also noticeably faster. That said, VNC has the big advantage of being free.
If you're just wanting a web/file server, then the optimum configuration may be to have a Linux server, running FreeNX, and using the NX Client for Windows to connect to it. I had previously used VNC, and was blown away by the speed difference. I don't think it puts as much of a load on the server, either, since it's working with the X commands, rather than continuously encoding the desktop image.

I use TightVNC myself, comes in handy when I need to check up on a machine without having to hook up a screen. Microsoft's Remote Desktop works even better and faster but of course it only works on Windows machines.

Used to use Real, then discovered Ultra...haven't installed Real since...Ultra has lots of nice scaling stuff, compression bits and bobs...I don't have the latest version but its fine with me.

RDC/Terminal Services are "better" but the file transfer in RVNC wins it for me!

I normally use Tight VNC, along with the mirror driver - I find it doesn't lag the host machine out as much as Real VNC with the normal capture method, and it's fairly snappy over wifi too.
