    Resizing a MASSIVE .jpg.

    Hey peeps,

I scanned in a picture, at a very high resolution. In the end, the picture was pretty big (20ish MB), but size is about 20,000x20,000.

I think this is the reason why i cant print it on those Kodak printers in Boots.

I wanna reduce the size, to see if it'll work but i can't seem to resize using ACDSee. It give this error:

"The file XXXXXXX.jpg is corrupt and causing plug-in errors. Should this file be added to the quarantine?"

I've tried using Irfanview but dont work either. Says:

" Error: Can't allocate memory for result image(s)!
    Out of memory."

Anyone know how i can approach this??

Well you don't have enough memory to handle such a large image!

Have you tried closing down every non-essential program and just using the resizing program?

Either that or use a commandline resizer.

OR the obvious solution: scan at a lower dpi!

You could try the trial version of Paint shop pro. That should do it.

    tried using paint? lol

    open the image in paint
    press ctrl + a
go to "image" and then "stretch/skew"
    type in both boxes 5%
resize the canvas to only display the photo

Maanged to grab a copy of Photoshop form a mate. Although slow, it eventually sorted it out.

    it's 20mb as a jpeg, but uncompressed, 20000x20000x24bit is 1.12GiB

the unix command "convert" from ImageMagick should be able to do it

yeah could have something to do with it

on a side note, i personally don't like the Kodak photo printers, much prefer Jessops as they use the same output system as their film processing (everything appears to be digital outputs) and is much higher quality.

don't scan at more than 300dpi (for the size you need). it's pointless. i.e, you want to end up with an image, that for your print dimensions is 300dpi.
