    Falling Firefox Figures

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/08...x_share_drops/

his consistent growth suffered a set-back when Firefox fell back from 8.71 per cent market share in June to 8.07 per cent in July, acording to web analytics firm NetApplications. Over the same period Microsoft's share rose from 86.56 per cent in June to 87.2 per cent in July, so Firefox's loss was Microsoft's gain.
I suspect this may be related to the image of Mozilla, as mentioned in the article, since this comes shortly after the announcement of the Mozilla Corporation. Firefox 1.5 may help to raise those numbers again.

We can't look at market share as a definate answer right now for market share.

Look how long it took for Netscape to drop.

Those figures are typically reported as DROPS by people who have not got a clue about stats. 1/2 of 1% ooooh everyone panic we're losing market share - give me a break.

The Inquirer (which I love) should understand that this is well within a margin of error. I bet if you were to see whether this was statistically significant the answer would be no.

Don't forget that many browsers need to pretend to be I.E./Windows because some idiot web designers decided to block browsers that aren't compatible instead of fixing their website... that does distort the IE figures significantly.

Java is security plagued at the moment.

    Just disable it.

I've been known to have my browser set to identify itself as IE so the sites work, rather than saying I need IE... at least Firefox has enough of a share that it should be seriously considered (and therefore we don't have most of the banking sites demanding IE any more).
One of the other factors that may have come into play very recently is the beta of IE 7. Some early adopters who like playing with the newest browser around may have started using that for a while to see whether it's caught up with Firefox noticeably.

A lesson for idiots who think Microsoft Internet Explorer has any value whatsoever for the human race:

    1) Internet Explorer cannot handle transparent PNG image files correctly. Why is this a problem? Take, as an example, a .gif. GIF only handles "transparent", or "not transparent". JPEG doesn't handle transparent at all. Because of this, your image files must be anti-aliased, at time of creation, against your background, to avoid the following effect:

    versus

Anti-aliased against a pink background, then changed to a white background. Because GIF is a retarded format grounded in the 1980s, it can't cope with real transparency - and as a result, makes for highly unmaintainable website images. PNG is the cure, but MSIE is designed to break on PNG images. There are bypasses using JavaScript, but you can't (for example) use a translucent background image on an element of a web page using MSIE.

    2) MSIE renders pages no better now than in 1997. Back when MSIE4 was released, it was a genuine revelation, leap years ahead of Netscape 4.x. However, whilst the rest of the world has moved on from crummy GeoCities-grade webpages, MSIE hasn't. For example, take CSS. CSS is a godsend for web developers, making pages simpler and easier to maintain, whilst delivering better-looking content. Not only that, but correct application of CSS allows for great features, such as enhanced versions of pages for partially sighted or blind people, without any redesigns needed on the part of the designer. MSIE has _SOME_ CSS support, but it is broken, leading developers to either make their code unsightly and hacked about, or maintain two concurrent CSS stylesheets - one for web browsers, and one retarded version for MSIE.

    3) ActiveX is STILL a dangerous security hole. If an ActiveX control manages to get onto your system by any methods (be it drive-by installation on Pre-XP-SP2, or simply fooling people afterwards), then it has COMPLETE and TOTAL control of your system. How does so much spyware get into peoples' computers? Because as MSIE users, a simple click lets them into anything. Java or XUL Extensions are a safer by design, if only by a little, because they don't present complete unadulterated access to your entire PC.

Deveopers who try to make anything more than a basic <html><body><h1>hello</h1></body></html> page work with MSIE are wasting enormous amounts of time and effort, to pander to the stupidity of others. Imagine if all games still had 1995 graphics because the retarded masses demounced 3D accelerator enthusiasts as a crazy minority. This is precisely the behaviour of MSIE users who want to keep the web firmly planted in the last millenium, with "omglolmsiesitehrox0r" comments.

Well said, directhex! To be honest, I don't mind the security holes in Internet Explorer - I'll just go and use something else. However, I do mind the CSS and PNG problems. Thanks to the lack of PNG transparency, it means that every time I slightly change the colour of a background on a webpage, I have to redo the images as well, thanks to IE. Even if Internet Explorer 7 came out now (which it won't) on every every version of Windows (which it won't) and fixed all the problems (which is unlikely), there will still be millions using old versions of Internet Explorer, which means we'll still have to cater for those people for a long time to come.
