    UT2004 linux

can it be run from a command line instead of it being run from the GUI as i would like to free up more ram to be used in the game. This idea has come about because of extremely slow loading times for maps about 3 minutes (has been tweaked from about 5). thanks for your help.

how very odd, load times for ut2004 linux for me are far faster than windows.

the answer to your question is "sort of". if you use a graphical login manager like gdm or kdm, write "ut2004" into ~/.xsession and log in with "default system session" as the session type. if you use startx to run x, then use ~/.xinitrc instead of ~/.xsession

thanks. the slow load times may be that i have 256MB of ram and nearly all is used for linux so it has to load the hole game to the hard drive swap partition.

    /home/$USERNAME/.Xsession

you'll need to create the file

bear in mind this will be the ONLY thing you can do when logging in with this username and the "default system session" option in GDM.

also bear in mind that FC3 is huge compared to many other distributions, practically anything else would be an improvement

Make sure you disable player caching in the game. It will alter loading speeds a lot on systems with <512 ram

Turn it off it isn't really necessary; iirc its about caching the skins of the default players (i.e. loading them). How many people use servers that use non-default skins / models. hmm.

By the way, any thoughts on the x64 linux UT2004 ? Worth installing Linux and all my drivers for?

It really is necessary for people with <512MB RAM. IIRC, one of the patches even changed it to default to that.
It causes to game to pre-load curretly in use player skins into memory. If somone joins a match using a different new skin then it will load it on the fly. May cause a slight pause, but its a hell of a lot better than loosing a load of the usable RAM to skins that will never be used.
Non-default models dont make any difference, as you wont ever see them unless you, the server, and the other person has them installed.

If your running low on a system with little RAM, look into forcing one model to save on your memory,
