    Named DNS

Just setup a WAMP machine, need to setup a named DNS.

We have a DNS hosts on our Domain, i want to setup a named DNS on it.

ie. i want a client to type just 'intranet' in IE and have it take them to IP.IP.IP.IP:80

    stupid Q but, how?

and do i set the name up on the server running Apache or on the DNS server? do i need DNS setup on the apache server too?

    you run SBS 2003 right?

you need to go to admin tools and DNS , find your local zone and add a CNAMe type record to the machine that is hosting the intranet ( which shoudl alreay have a more conventional hostname.

    S2003 ENT.

ok, so I can see the IP and machine i want, right clicking on the individual machine brings nothing, right clicking on the 1 brings up the CNAME alias context, but surely if i create an Alias its going to be against all our boxes, is that right?

CNAMEs go in forward lookups, pick which host you want your intranet connections to go to by A records and you can make a CNAME for it.

*edit* oh yea, I almost forgot, put a . right after your CNAME otherwise it'll fill in the rest of the domain automatically, i.e. intranet would = intranet.ourdomain.net.. intranet. would just be one word.
