No no, Windows, I don't think you understand, I NEED this device stopped NOW

Not when you feel like it, what the??

Try again later, how about you stop holding the drive hostage and let me go to bed. This function of windows leaves me with no option

    except risk data loss

Lol I'm too lazy to 'safely remove' my USB sticks - And I haven't had a problem yet. In fact, the only thing I safely remove is my iPod - only because I've heard horrific stories....

Does safely remove involve destruction-by-foot/fire/throwing-at-agresive-dogs or crushing by bricks?

    Well it should...

It probably hasn't finished a delayed write operation or something. You could try turning off the write cache on the device ('Optimise for quick removal' on the Policies tab for the drive in Device Manager) which would allow you to disconnect without waiting on the 'safely remove' stuff.

Right-click drive in "My Computer", "Eject". Remove drive.

    Job done.

If you try to select the remove hardware option again it should work (might take 3 attempts at worst i would hope). My external HDD does this but if I select to remove it again it works (I guess it is flushing buffers or something)

If its a memory stick or a hard drive with an activity light, and that isn't flashing or showing activity, just unplug it! (at your own risk of course!!)

You can optimise the USB devices for faster writing or the ability to not do damage when you don't do a safe removal. Might be usefull for you in general.

iPods have to be removed carefully because some of them have a habbit of dieing due to an un-documented feature. If only apple could learn what standards are, rather than just "control my experiance from begging to end". I wounder if thats what starlin said to people?

Anyway, its an important feature to dismount properly, every OS should force it, as people have said, go into device manager and optimise for quick removal, and u should find hte problem goes away (but doing stuff with the drive will be slower).

Well, this ALWAYS happens for my MP3 player. It saw it can't remove it, so I try straight after, then it's fine. Everytime is the same - always 2 attempts .

My second hd on my laptop won't let me remove it (same message as orig poster) unless: my computer/ explorer is closed, the drive is not shared on a network, google desktop search is stopped and norton autoprotect is off!... easy and slick.... I tend to drag the bugger out kicking and screaming and then gently weep as the head crashes into the hd surface!!
