Any MS Exchange admins out there??

Got A few questions if anyone has any ideas?
Stuff has gone on recently @ work which means the IT dept has been caught with their pants down regarding email archiving and searchability (ie we have no policy in place) so im trying to pre-empt whats going to happen next..
first of all is there a way to search a mailstore (exchange 2003) without needing 3rd party software?

secondly.. the actual laws regarding email archiving are about as clear as mud.. does anyone who manages a exchange server have a archive policy.. how long do the archives go back, and what software are you using to manage this?

Cheers in advance from a Junior sys-admin of a dis-organised company

I think requirements for mail archiving depend on the industry you are in.

Personally I hate using PST files so I'm a big fan of GFI mail archiver ( www.gfi.com )

unless you are running message tracking then searching a mail store isn't very straightforward. (Note that GFI Mail archiver makes searching a doddle - it streams it all to a SQL database )

Make sure ( if you are using 2k3 standard edition , you get Service pack 2 on - it will increase your store size to 70gig which means that you can possibly afford to have larger mailboxes ( but try to keep them under 2 Gig or you'll upset outlook.

I'm not sure on the searching nativly but I'll ask around for you. Feel free to drop me a PM if you want to include more detail

Thanks, so thats another vote for GFI then

for now, i just need to search the current mailstore for a name.. im running a full text search index now (MY GOD does that tan the server.. 100% usage and massive I/O all the way ) - hopefully that will allow me to try to see if what im looking for... but ill have to arrange a meeting with HR to set out a archiving policy for the future (let them sort it out lol)

ps, i know what you mean about 2gig, have numerous people whose pst's hose themselfs.. (majority of company are still running on the old pop3 server)
