FWIW panda picked up stuff on this PC, and it has McAfee network version installed and autoupdating. I quite like the free online virus scanner from Panda, it may be slow but it will even clean some stuff

In addition to your antivirus, I highly recommend Microsoft AntiSpyware. It's suprisingly effective!

    NOD32, period

Kaspersky seems to come highly recommended too, but NOD32 is my personal choice.

As mentioned above Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta is good for spyware too... Its based on Giant and you really can't complain for free I use it alongside NOD32 & Look n Stop Firewall with no problems.

Seeing as we're on topic.... I'm currently using Norton 2005. Would it be worth using NOD32 once I reinstall Windows in the next few days?

Definitely. If offers better protection than Norton and is a lot lighter on system resources.
Its also updated daily, sometimes more than once.

You can just try the free trial for 30 days and see how you like it.
