    Windows XP tablet edition

Someone's brought a tablet PC (Acer I think?) into our workshop with WinXP tablet edition on it. The software is screwed, and he doesn't have any OS backup discs or anything. Will a standard WinXP home installation work?

It will work but it won't have all the 'tablet' bits.

If you don't have access to the original restore discs (no tablets ship with true install media) then try using MCE 2005 OEM CD's with the COA key stuck on the base of the Acer machine. Most of the additional drivers / osftware can be downloaded from the Acer support site.

That's kind of correct; if you're running the original Tablel PC OS then updating to SP2 will install the 2005 version.
