    Help with partiton/reinstall

I need to do a clean install as its been well over a year since last one so if you can ps help i would really appreciate it! As i am really thick when it comes to things like this so if you can ps guide me through this process as simple as poss that will be really Great!
Ps I also have purchased Partition Magic as it is meant to be a lot easier!

Right my sigs above if that will help but i will try and explain my set up! I have 2 HDs (C&G) my OS is on the 120gb and capture/Vids/pics/music is on the other 200gb. They are both NTFS! Now what i was hoping to do is try and do this without losing my settings & progs etc,is this possible? MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Not really - you can back up the registry and then stick it back on, but that defeats the whole point of formatting.

Yes it is but it's not really a reinstall it's more a case of renewing your hardware settings (this can smooth out some glitches people occasionally experience with driver files)

You can read about it at:

    http://motherboard.windowsreinstall.com/winxp.htm

You need to look at section 2 or section 3. Personally I have never used the technique in Section 3 so do not know what settings it backs up (it may not backup your non MS applications). However, I have used the technique in Section 2 several times with complete success. Obviously you will not be adding new hardware just refreshing the install.

NB to get the best out of this make sure ALL your drivers are on a CD or on the Hard Disk. Additionally, Section 2 works best with a "slipstreamed" XP CD. That means if you have XP SP2 running on your PC you should create an XP SP2 slipstreamed bootable CD. Once it is finished just go to Windows update and download the latest patches over your already SP'd installation

If you do not have a bootable XP CD already (ie you have an OEM image disk) then you might need to go with Section 3 but as I said I'm not sure that it will do what you wnat. I know that Section 2 will allow you to do what you need.

    Hi thanks for quick reply!

Re if you do not have a bootable XP CD already (ie you have an OEM image disk) I do have a old 2.5 yr old XP mesh disc that came with my PC. I thought that was a real! As i can boot from it! ie repair OS.
Ps that link you gave me had all 'fastclick Ad' pop ups!

CD might be OK if when you boot from it you go into XP install menus and not some customised Mesh menu. If you have a CD burner why not use it to make a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD -> http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1626

I wasn't aware of adverts on last link as I use Firefox

Great link Cheers! Can i also inc all my latest drivers etc into the slipstreamed disc? "I do have Nero & Alcohol 120% which is better"?

Ps To save me a lot of time would it be possible to use another xp home disc (oem) and use MY serial from my copy? I ask this as my Dad has just brought a pc from mesh so his disc will have all the latest updates SP packs etc!
Ps Another silly Qs but if i do a complete install on my c drive is there a chance i would lose my files that is on my 2nd HD Doh!!

Not sure how to do that. I think it is best to just have them avail on a CD or on local hard disk (preferred method). If your PC uses a RAID controller for the disk (as opposed to a normal IDE controller) then make sure you get the XP RAID drivers on a floppy as you'll need them I can guarantee

That should be fine although if it doesn't include SP2 then you'll need to install SP2 again which is why people like to make slipstreamed CDs

You won't be doing a complete install. Although it looks as if you are installing windows it is just rebuilding the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) and refreshing the system files. When complete and you reboot than everything should be as before. The only thing that might go weird is the drive letter for the second disk but you can sort that through disk manager
