Possible Post Virus Trouble with computer…

Ok I have been give a laptop to look at that seems to be running slowly, I don’t have the OS disc (winxp) or the drivers disc so at this stage a reinstall is a non goes, I have scanned the drive using the latest norton and the trend online scanner, both game up with nothing. Adaware did not find anything either.

Apparently they had a virus a while ago and that’s when the slow up’s started. It’s a fairly modern IBM laptop and runs a 2.4 Intel with 256 meg of ram, the cpu usage seems normal although the ram usage using some freeware software seems to be in the 90% all the time, although how good that software is I don’t know.

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this? Also any good free diagnostics programs out there that can test the laptop for performance and usage?
Could a virus be using the memory?

    Anything would be a help

Its most likely spyware or an over fragmented HD.

If you know what virus it was, have a look at the various AV vendors websites to see how to manually uninstall it (or the symptoms of the infection, changes to registry keys etc) and examine the system files to see if there is anything left over from the infection. If so, remove it. Back up the registry and system files before doing anything to it. Once it is working OK with any changes you make, destroy the back up! (Or at least mark it as suspect)
