    Password protect USB Pen Drive?

Does anyone know how I can password protect a USB Pen Drive? (it's a generic "USB Bar") I've done a google search but without knowing the manufacturer I'm finding it difficult to find any information...

    cheers

    Josh

what sort of level of protection do you want?

you can use a filesystem level encyption, but that tends to limit you to one domain/directory

do you mind third party software been present?

I think just something simple would be good - as they may use it out of the domain / directory. Don't mind 3rd party software...

You could create a PGP disk on it, reading it would require pgp to be installed on any host machine though.

can anyone point me in the right direction to a free easy to use piece of software that will work with a variety of different pen drives?

i had a look at the pen drive in question and looked at the hardware id, and it's simply: "USB BAR" !! (whereas the pendrive I have is '3System usb flash disk')

cryptainer is limited to 25mb and seems quite complicated (especially for someone who's not computer literate) - ZipGenius lets you encrypt zip files but I'm not sure how many people have ZipGenius on their machines... Windows XP has built in file protection (link), but most people are using Windows 2000 and I'm not sure whether I can format the pen drives as NTFS...

DESlock+ is now free for personal use. I have not used it myself yet, but it is highly thought of.

Re: Password protect USB Pen Drive?

There is the application name Rohos Mini Drive , which allows you to protect your pen drive with password. I'm using it and interface is quite friendly , its available for free to try.

    ChaosSystem, pardal51 and shibris,

Thank you Guys, {Sadly none of your little thanks triangles are there} that is exactly what I'm after today.

Downloaded it and donated, been sporadically searching for something similar for months.

    Yeah!

    Petra.
