    i wonder if.....?

ive got a pc at my parents place that need windows repairing or reinstalling, now this is fine as i have an xp disc with my new pc.

the problem i have is that my sis needs office xp which is on the pc but im wondering if i can move office from prog file on c: to my d: drive so that if needed i can format the c: and move office back over once its done.

i dont have the office disc as it cracked

is it safe to assume that once its back on c: that the links for various files and folders will still work?

    cheers

chances are they wont, I reinstalled xp on my machine on a new partition but left everything but the windows files on the old one, few aplications worked and office would not start for me without reinstalling it

You would need to back up the registry if you want old programs to work in a new reinstall (although that means you keep the problems of an old registry as well).

You could replace the nasty evil cracked version of office with openoffice. Its free, works with office files, looks very similar to office, does most things office does, and by many is seen to be superior in osme ways. I use MSoffice at home and openoffice at work.

Define overpriced, expensive certainly, but consider how long you spend playing a 30 pound game, then consider how long you spend using office/windows and do the math. THe offer still stands for the opencd

While your trying out openoffice why not install Linux instead of Windows, if they only browse the net, send emails and do office stuff they should be able to get on with Linux fine.

I'd personally advise against using OpenOffice myself if you're fresh from MS Office as it is significantly less advanced as Microsoft Office at things like real-time grammar correcting.

For example, with version 1.1 (the last version of OpenOffice I used before I bit the bullet and went back to Microsoft <shudders>) the program doesn't bother with changing the beginning letter of a sentence into a capital letter and "i" doesn't get automatically corrected into "I" for example...

Although these are minor gripes, but if you're like me and you've been brought up using the Microsoft Word programs since the 3.0 days you'll understand me for saying... In this day in age we deserve better...

I mean don't get me wrong though, OpenOffice is more than advisable for people who are low on funds, who are bothered to correct their own grammar and spellings and proof read their work (like myself, just look at any of my posts and you'll see practically flawless spelling grammar) or if you hate Microsoft products...

OpenOffice is good for what it is and it is to my understanding that there is no dedicated development team who are paid to keep it with the times and as such it is in my humble opinion not meant to compete with Microsoft Office, it is more just an alternative...I'm sure you lot will agree??

P.S. I REALLY have nothing against Linux, I actually hate Microsoft products, its just some of their programs are undenyably good (Microsoft Office for example) and I can't be asked to understand Linux and make my own drivers etc. for Linux...

LOL I've heard many complaints against Linux before but never that it's evil, that's usually a comment reserved for the Vole!

Installing software on Linux these days is a lot easier than it used to be, graphically there is stuff like Synaptic Package Manager or at the console in Debian for example you can type apt-get package name

I must admit OpenOffice doesn't have as many features as Office but some features in Office just make the user lazy, auto correct being one of them.

I actually find installing stuff on Linux is generally easier than on Windows. The vast majority of programs I can install using apt-get install programname, while others are usually a case of dpkg -i filename if it is a .deb, or ./filename if it something like a .bin or .run.

As for office suites, I use three different office suites without any real problems - Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org and Gnome Office. For at least basic tasks, such as spreadsheets and word processing, I feel comfortable with them all.

I suspect you get confused quite easily. Linux is probably easier to install applications , if you get the right package.

Just another quick reminder of not discussing illegally copied versions of software too
