    Norton Ghost 9.0 Questions...

When restoring a hard drive there are a few options. The last two are RESTORE DRIVE SIGNATURE and RESTORE MBR.

I believe only Windows Server OS's write a drive signature, is this correct? Does Windows XP Pro write one as well? So when is it good to select this option?

My second questions has to do with restoring the MBR. When should you do this? Do the drives have to be identical for this to work properly?

    Thanks in advance.

XP Pro uses the drive signature to identify which drive letter goes where, so yes it does use them. It's an NT thing, XP is a derivative of it.

MBR - when you're cloning a whole HD (perhaps with multiple boot partitions) and want it to act just like the old disk.

And lastly, GET RID OF GHOST 9.0 for god's sake it's rubbish. Spend some money on Acronis True Image and live in a much better world. Ghost 9.0 has bugger all to do with Ghost 8 (it's actually a renamed bit of software) sadly.

Well thanks for trying. The thing is, I've been doing restores with different options set and it seems to work better when restoring to a new drive if I DON'T restore the MBR or the DRIVE SIGNATURE. I restored 4 times writing the MBR and SIG and it worked fine for awhile but then started getting blue screens. I reformatted the new drive and did another restore, this time leaving the MBR and SIG restore options unchecked and it's been working fine for a day and a half. Go figure.

Anybody wanna tell us what's going on here? I've read all kinds of theories in other places on the WWW but have yet to find any definitive explanation of when to use and when not to use these options in Norton Ghost 9.0 (which seems to work very well by the way, aside from me not knowing about the use of these options).
