    Unhappy Accelerated Sound

I've recently reformated my PC, and installed all neccessary drivers as usual. Eventually, I installed some games, and played Fahrenheit. Occasionally, the sound and main character would just accelerate. He's talk faster and move a lot faster.

After playing Fahrenheit, I thought I'd try CS:S. Same thing happens (although no character acceleration as it's a multiplayer game I suppose). Same thing happens with DOD:S too.

Until 5 mins ago, I thought it just happened with games, but I noticed my music playing through winamp to get faster too.

The effects last for about a minute, and don't seem to have any sort of pattern to them (expect when I run a lot in Fahrenheit - it happens then). I'd guess that it goes at about twice normal speed.

I've tried downloading more sound drivers from the internet, but that hasn't seem to have helped. I'm using an onboard sound card through an MSI K7N2 DELTA motherboard with 2.1 packard bell speakers. The sound driver is Nvidia version 6.14.375.0.

    What else should I try?

Ohhh - I'll try direct X. I think a few games re-downloaded it because it came with them - I'll get this one from the net though .

I'm going to have to bump this as I have no idea what's causing it, and it's VERY annoying.

Try the DirectX tool thingybob? (I think you type dxdiag from the Run dialog box)

Are events coming too soon and being played back at the correct speed or are they increasing slightly in pitch aswell?

you on a dual core, dual cpu, or multipule virtual CPU system?

i used to have this problem when i was on my dual PIII rig, never had a problem on my dual PII. Sound drivers were to blame, can't coupe with certain code been run parallelly.

I tried the dxdiag thing, and it seemed to be fine.

The sound sounds normal (i think) except that it's speeded up a bit.

I'm using just a single core single CPU (see sig).

I've just tried installing some different drivers that Trippledence showed me (must have missed them), so I'll see how it goes again .

If everything's just a little faster, my bet is it's getting confused along the line and playing 44.1K back at 48K.

You thought of sticking all your comp to stock speeds etc? Could be that you have OC'ed your CPU abit too much? Just a thought...

Somewhat unlikely, since playback rates arn't tied to the CPU clock.
