    Linux on an old ibook...?

My girlfriends old apple 300MHz ibook is at the point where it's apple OS 9.xx is no longer any good most of the time other than for rudimentary browsing so we're looking to update it a bit if at all possible.

I was thinking of sticking linux on it - Yellow dog looks like it's a mac-only distro, but the mainstream ones like mandrake and debian also seem to have mac compatability. There's also Gentoo which I think is the very compact one that installs and updates off the internet?

Easy-updatability and simple installations of applications would be a bonus. It'll mainly be for browsing, email, and interacting with things like digital camera, mobile phones, mp3-player, etc.

I think the HDD is 4Gb so space is pretty scarce. I could be wrong and it could be bigger but I think that's right...

    thanks in advance!

well and older version will have older software on it, which will most likley work better with older hardware.

its the same as running OSX on it - its newer, needs more stuff, newer hardware and more space, same rules with linux/windows/$anything_else

the newer you get - the more resources of "some sort" it will need.

quick google shows up several likely-looking results for knoppix+powerpc, so I might give that a go next week.

    I'll go play
