    What appliction(s) ?

    Hiya guys,

    Few questions for you -

I have a home network, which consists of

    wireless router-

    Laptop
    Laptop2
    Laptop3
    PC

    Wired Switch(connected to wireless router)-

    PC
    PC
    PC

Now, my mum has been running her own company for some time - and is doing very well, so were looking at replacing some of the new pcs, shes also going to move out of her small office in the house and move into the garage, once it's done up.

She currently has her own domain ( no website ) for her emails.

I'd like to do a few things ( if possible ):

First, as there moving out to the garage, the wireless router won't go that far, it's a belkin 'G' adsl router... are there any newer technologies that may go further?
Is it better to use a pc to serve the internet, rather than a router ( read below may give you a better idea )

Without a static IP i don't suppose I can host the emails on a server, and I guess it wouldn't be very reliable - but can I get a server to download all her emails and store them, so she has quick access to them all the time?

Backups... shes terrible at backing up her data, and FTP's seems all to much for her - any easy programs/windows tools that I can setup to just copy folders over once every couple of days?

Is it possible to setup a good - easy to use VOIP server, for use over the lan - like teamspeak... but abit easier to use if possible ( and less buggy ).

Firewalls/spam blockers etc... suggestions as to how to get these on one pc rather than every pc? and also, what email spam-blockers would people recomend, our one at work is top notch ( although it does block *@hotmail.* so that could explain it ) any thoughts?

Any other useful applications/tools on the network would be great, I'd like to get it setup so easy a monkey could use it..

A linux box would enable yopu to run something like Q mail (for mail serving) asterix (for VOIP/PSTN exchange), fiewall software etc and more. (apache web server?) You could also use it as a network file server and schedule automatic backupss from it. Better to run cable to the garage if possible. You would need static IP addresses really - Zen offer a block of 8 (5 useable) as part of their ISP service. That would allow you to link your domain names to your IP addresses. However if yopu are going to do that, yopu need to think about UPS etc to keep the servers running in the event of power cuts/outages. You are moving into a bigger league.
