    Any Win95 specialists left!!!

Hi, I've just started work and have been given an old win95 machine to do with what I will.

Its win95b and I'm trying to get usb up and working which I have done on many machines in the past. Unfortunately the PC has been setup with a limited "system properties" window (when you right click on my computer and select properties) so I'm not able to see the device manager tab which may help me in my quest. I would also like to enable the quicklaunch bar... but rather irritatingly that menu has been disabled too (it has ie 5.5 so it should be available).

I didn't think win95 had admin rights (I can still add remove software and install whatever I like, apart from a sodding quicklaunch menu!). Anyway, is there a way to re enable the the device manager and toolbar menu or are there other apps that will let me do this,

    Cheers,

    JB

winkey-break might work, or device manage from control panel. failing that, see if you can find the relevant .cpl files and use them

or stick win98 se on it

Device manager from control panel doesn't work, and because its a work pc I can't reinstall (loads of proprietry softwar built up over the years!)... Windows key and break still brings up the limited system properties menu (no device manager or anything advanced). I'll have a look into the cpl files thing,

    Cheers,

If the machine used to be attached to a network, it might well still have a network security policy applied to it...

Yep thats the monkey! When you log in it downloads a .pol file from the server which writes to and locks the registry preventing the use of some features. I have found work arounds (policy editors, dos based reg editors etc) but its now gotten a bit rich for my blood... I don't want to lose my job b4 I even get started! All I wanted was a sodding quicklaunch bar. I would try and go through official channels but 95 machines are not supported by our IT contractors so we would have to pay £££ for anything they did!! Doh,

    Cheers for your help guys,

    JB

how about setting up shortcuts on the desktop, but with shortcut keys- that way you can do ctrl-alt-w for word, or whatever..

WTF they have you working on a win95 machine.

    Resign......NOW!
They are obviously complete cheapskates and a really bad company to work for!

Any machine that was around when Win95 was the norm should have been binned long, long ago!

You have no idea!!! I won't say who I'm working for, but our IT contractors are xxxxxxx (I've decided not to say!)... and they managed to shaft the company real bad about 7 years ago. They managed to get us to sign up for a deal where they supplied the PCs and maintained them for a meagre £600 per unit per year for 8 years... Unfortunately they did not agree an upgrade policy so we are still paying £600 per year for win 95 pentium 200's or there abouts... whats worse is that we had about 5000 of the buggers. We are now just coming to the end of the lease agreement so the company can start to function again at last! Whats worse is my PC is from a newer generation (P3 750) but when it was bought, they still put win95 on it.... aaargh.

    Cheers,

    JB
