    Please Help Xp Wont Boot

Guys my main pc (specs below) had been on for about 30 mins this morning, i was just surfing on a Forum, the only thing i had done with the pc today.
Then i went to close down firefox, it was at this point i realized the PC had frozen.
    The mouse, keyboard nothing worked.
So i had to reboot, first attempt went through post then came the "start pc from last known" +the other safe mode options.
Going the safe mode route results in the pc stopping at the loading system32\drivers screen.
there are no error messages whatsoever.

Nothing seems to get the pc to boot.
This pc has been stable and not missed a beat for the last two years.
I do have a recent ghost image, BUT before i revert back to that i just wondered what else i could try.
Oh Dear i cannot even get Ghost to work, it boots from the dvd drive gets to a screen after it starts to load, that says "please wait" snd then it just hangs there.
    Thanks in advance

Can you give and exact run down of what happens?

What sort of hardware have you under the hood?

Have you tried to start with the "last known config" option ? That will revert many system values to the latter ones that worked.

    Good luck!

1st, i was just surfing the net, noticed the mouse was not working when i went to close firefox, CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager did nothing, windows key did nothing not even any HD activety.
So i hit the reset button, the pc went through the post stage no error bleeps, then went to the " We appologize for the inconvenience, bla blah page" with the options "last known good configuration etc" "start windows normally".
No matter which option on this page is selected the result is the same, i get a blank screen, the only option that is different is if i choose the "safe mode" option, this actually starts the loading process but stops when it gets to "Windows\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys".

If i try to use Ghost 9.0 it goes through the loading stage but then stops again at the "Starting windows" message, this also applies to the WinXp disk.

I have run "SeaTools" HD diagnostic program(runs from floppy) ran a quick test, came back fine, then ran thorough also came back with no errors.

The same with Memtest86, ran this through all the tests twice, not one single error.

I can get running is via floppy, is Partition magic 8.0, and when it has loaded and i run the disk info tab i get the Error 1516: "Partition improperly dismounted". I guess this is because of the way XP just crashed in the first place.

Temp of cpu has remained constant at 43-44c, the same as my almost identical pc in the same room.

    Specs are as stated below.

I am starting to believe that my troubles are to do with the above ERROR #1516, that shows up in PQ.
I have found quite a few references to this error. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...ic&svy=&csm=no

But i cannot use the solution as i can not access the Recovery console to do the chkdsk.

Do you have an XP install disc lying around? It will act as a bootable drive and should allow you to access the recovery console.

There seems to be the problem, i insert the disk i am offered the chance to Press F2 to use ASR, i cannot use that option as i have not made the floppys required, then as i say above it loads some files then hangs at the starting windows screen.

Is there another method i can use .

Is there an option for the recovery console? You can manually type commands into it and there is an option to display a list of available commands.

Just make sure its the recovery console and not the ASR.

I'm afraid not i do not have any other options offered to me.
The recovery console is i believe an option that you can choose once the disk progresses further. which ofcourse mine is not doing.

The recovery console in on the Windows Xp disc if you are booting from it - as think it now asks "Press any key to boot from disc" then if you can get into recovery console "help" shows the available commands. More at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;314058

If all fails but you can get into the installation of the disc, then I would try to install OVER the current version overwriting all existing system files with the default ones.
    Woohoo now Assistant Manager!

Thanks for the reply, but i have it all sorted now.
Turned out to be the mobo had died, i tried other HD's on it with the same results every time.

So a new mobo and fresh install later all is ok.
