    program shut down?

i was wondering if someone could maybe help me out. i dont know to much of anything about computers.... but when i graduated college about 3 years ago, i had my video editing teach (he also was a css teacher) build me a computer. i dont know what all it has except some basic stuff..... i have dual processors (dont know how big or fast or whatever it is but i know its AMD, unless thats a mother board thing), about 150 gigs of hard drive space, 512 mb of ram, and a matrox 2500 card all running on windows XP professional. my problem is.... i start up premiere, thats fine. then i work on my project and like as soon as i get into it and working and editing clips faster..... it shuts off. like it just shuts my program down. it didnt do this before, but i am wondering if i maybe click on some setting? or maybe its a hardware problem? or whats going on? it makes me mad b/c i paid ALOT of money for this computer and its always giving me a problem now. i hardly ever used it. any suggestions? thanks!

Sorry, but it's really hard to read that block of text.

What exactly is premier then? A video editing program? And your PC is 3 years old?

I don't know much about video editing, but I'm pretty sure they use up a lot of system resources, so maybe your 3 year old PC isn't coping?

Other possiblities is spyware/viruses I suppose. Make sure you have a firewall, and use programs such as ad-aware, spybot search and destroy and microsoft anti-spyware. Also check for viruses. Giving your PC a defrag wouldn't hurt either. To avoid getting any spyware etc, it would also be a good idea to start using firefox instead of internet explorer.

    * If you've already done the last bit, then good. I only put it in as you don't seem too computer literate .

I know it's hard when you don't know too much about computers, but could you maybe give a bit more information like when exactly does this happen? Is it when you open a file etc?

Are you running any other programs as well?
    Is your PC going slow?
    Have you downloaded/installed anything recently?

I think by 'Premier' he means Adobe Premier?

Oh my god, Adobe Premiere 6.5 and the latest, Pro 1.5 are major system eaters..

You need butt loads of RAM, a fast CPU and at least a 200Gb hard drive as projects can get very large...

    sorry about the giant paragraph....

i do mean Adobe preimer. but i dont even have it hooked up to the internt because i dont want to get any viruses or what not. so i know its not that.

i sometimes have other programs (like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator) open when i have Premier open. I also have only Premier open as i am working and it still shuts down. so i dont think its that.

the computer does not run slow.... its really fast. i maybe only have 2 gigs used of the hard drive.

I havent downloaded anything, except maybe i installed a dvd burner..... could that be causing the problem?

the reason why i think it might be a hardware problem is b/c when i sometimes go to start up my computer and it sometimes wont boot up. it usually does another of the following things::::

1... i power up, but it wont boot up. it turns on but its just a black screen. no memory test no nothing.

2.... i power up and the memory test starts and i can't bypass the memory test. as if just my keyboard isnt working. BUT... it loads all the memory and starts to recount over. so it just keeps counting memory over and over and over.... wont leave that screen.

3.... i power up and the screen comes up where the memory should be loading, but it doesn load it... it just sits on that screen.

    4... it loads fine.
    *********************

the computer is just a mess. my buddy put a card in it one day and downloaded all the window patches for me. thats the only time it was hooked up to the internet.... this was also after these problems have already been there. he thinks its my mother board. he also hasnt looked at it entirely.
    *****************************

    thanks for the help!

You'll probably have used a lot more than 2 gigs. Right click your C drive and go to properties to find out .

Anyway, I'm not exactly an expert in these things, but I'd guess it was your RAM. Could anyone else give a 2nd opinion?

Or I suppose it might just be that windows is dying, and needs to be reformatted.

Like I said, I'm not exactly an expert, just throwing up some suggestions .

EDIT - perhaps you should go into task manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL), click on processes, and se how much memory premier is using when it's open. If this number is anywhere near 512, then that probably means you're low on memory.

ok... if i remember i will try to get those answers and more for you tonight.

i will try to figure out some more of my specs for you guys. hopefully that gives you a better idea.

i have premier running right now... i actually had it running for about 10 hours exporting my cousins wedding video. it worked fine. its only when i am working in the program it shuts down. actually editing and moving clips around.

i will see how much memory its using when i am starting up premier and how much i am using when working in the program.... and so on.

i will see how much memory i have used up. i know its nowhere even close to being half. 2 gigs is a little low. but i knows its def not higher than 10. i have 4 differnt hard drives.
1 is for video clips when editing
1 is for audio clips when editing
1 is my c-drive... like my saved stuff and windows and programs etc....
then i have 1 that is my F drive... its all backup stuff. i dont even know exactly what all. the guy that built my computer put it all in there.... i never went in there.

but i will find out what all space was used... and the memory thing also.

First thing id try would be to head down to your local electronics place (malpins is prob your best bet, definately not comet currys whatever) and grab a tin of canned air. Take the side off the case and give everything a good clean out.

can you download a copy of memtest86 (cant remember the link, google should bring it up) on the machine youre using to post then copy it to a cd/floppy and run it on the broken machine? If that throws up any errors then its definately ram.

What version of premier are you using? If its brand new its likely not to be too happy on a 3 year old system anyway, no matter how top of the range it was then.

ok.... i checked my hard drive space last night. my video and audio drives are near empty. my back up drive ( f ) is still the same it always was... like 2 gigs i think.... then my c drive. that near full. i am gonna get alot of that stuff off of there. i still have like 3 gigs left on it. but there is about 32 gigs used on it. i have a total of like 200 gigs all together. about maybe 40 gigs used. total.

as i was running premier at an idle.... memory was real low... cpu was real low. as i did some editing and moved stuff around ram went to about 312 being used and cpu like 28%

i forgot to see what all specs my computer is. i dont even know what to really look for. i am gonna try to spray some cleaner in there and see if maybe thats the problem. i know it is dusty.

CAN SPRAYING DUST CLEANER MESS IT UP? or knock some wire off or anything. i dont know how fragle that stuff is.
