long as u have a disk and a product number to punch in you should be, unless the product has been activated more than 5 times then u would need to call MS and re activate it over the phone, not heard of an academic version does that mean its swiped from UNI ?...lol
bung it in your new pc and the dvd drive boot off it and u will soon see, if it all goes pear shaped u can just wipe the drive and go and buy a new copy of xp for about £75.

However you would have to buy another piece of hardware with this as most windows Xp sold are OEM - only to be sold with hardware such as hard drives, mouses (apparently from MicroDirect as long as it is Microsoft branded.)
