    Windows OneCrap (OneCare)

twice ive installed it and twice its come straight back off.

i first installed it on BETA Day 1 and uninstalled it a week later, i received an email yesterday saying how much it had improved, so i decided to go again. This time, it lasted just one reboot.

It effectively killed most web apps and caused serious problems.

    Anyone else tried it?

Its beta, what do you expect, its a beta product of a product that has very little functionality.

I'm all for things like OneCare, because there are a lot of computer users who need help in making their PC secure (blaster, IIS worms, Apache Worms, PHP Worms).

But is there a specific gripe you have?

First time i have heard of this app, cant see how Microsoft could develop a app like this and not give it away free.... it seams to fall between features they give away currently (eg sp2 firewall) and possible areas where there O/s's fail (security flaws)

    which flaws exactly? A firewall?

TBH i DETEST the idea of a software firewall, why? Because they are insecure, i've yet to see one i can't code around if any user has debug privledges (90% of people run as admin, so this is common).

impossible, i fail to see what features ur saying cover up security flaws? From what i see its a norton systemworks style product, backup, performance tweaking etc. Now when people don't have the knowledge or skillset $5 or $10 a month is a good deal (if they back it up with good support).

The problem i see with this, is anti-trust suites. Microsoft use the internet explorer component to deploy new shell components (updated "common controls") they get a law suite, this if they gave away free would do the same (if i were them, i'd give it away free for 2 years, then once EVERYONE is used to using it, charge but thats because i'd abuse my posistion as the OS vender to get such market coverage).

If onecare helps eejits make their PC safe, then thats good, i still think you shouldn't be allowed on the net without passing simple IQ + network tests.

Love the fact that in the thread title a need is felt to slate the product your using, then put the real name in brackets.

If possible could we please append some more M$ and Microsux comments in too

TheAnimus, you're basing that assumption for MS users. Linux can have software firewalls and be on a non-admin account (which is most common) and people may not be able to get around them. Personally I have a hardware and software firewall, in fact, I could have double hardware firewall if I want.

And yes, why slate MS? Tbpfh, they're not only providing an OS, but they're providing some more software to help combat hackers and viruses. Remember, MS cover a huge range of software, if they were specifically designing just one piece of software then that application would be much better.

erm no Kezzer, linux by standard isn't proccess secure (well the latest version might be), hence all the projects which provide it (selinux), there are lots of dirty tricks to get around it.

    BSD is a different matter.

software firewalls are always vunerable. Hardware ones can often be tricked around too.

few things are mpossible to get past, you can only minimise the risk as much as possible.

I've personally never seen software firewalls running on linux run as a non-root user, simpley due to the level of interaction required, and to a certain degree I'd imagine the same principal would be true of BSD, all though I believe the BSD process accounting is a little more matrure, but I'm no bsd master.

I'm just ammused by people who call MS, M$ or Microsux, and the call products bad mocking names like "one crap" yet, using this thread as an example, the user is a Microsoft user, who has installed the one crap product not once, but twice. A tad ironic.

See you qualify to drink beer on my table.

I would call myself a hobbesit who has a bit of OCD in there as well (obsessive compulsive disorder). I like computers and maths, it makes me feal relaxed because everything is predictable. I can program countless different languages, write binary code for most microchip PICs and low end atmels (OCD is usefull for some things!). I've made my own multitasking OS, my own USB hardware. I've even been ranked on the clq in the top 50 for some half-life mod. (I didn't goto secondary school much).

Yet in the computer science department at uni, its not "cool" to use windows. I mean what the hell? I love it, its the best OS by miles. I use linux too, extensivly, BSD even more (I am a whore of telling people to use m0n0wall too!)

But when i wear my visual studio .net (by far and away the best IDE i've ever used) t-shirt (was free) or any other microsoft junk i have, some people snear at it.

I liked computers because their logical, its easy to evaulate things because they've got clearly defined bounds. NT is a more secure kernel than linux, fact from a design point of view (newer paradigms), I've only meet one security consultant who disagrees, and that was due to his open source loving. Now why do people think its cool to use linux? It just plain isn't. When i'm rich enough i'm going to have to employ some pimply faced 14year old to manage linux for me, because it pisses me off to much. Same draw as debain/DSL media is stress putty, stress ball, a joke book, and a message someone gave me (high sentimental value). This is required for me to run linux without jumping out of the window.

Fact is this is good product from what i've seen, dosen't do much, but every little helps, the first post is a useless description of it from a beta standpoint. Then it gets worse at every step, with such extravigence of confusion of ideas leading to someone thinks a linux software firewall is safer than a windows one. I mean no valid points about proccess security were ever made? If someone wants to make some good points about what this program is doing, how it will help then go ahead, hell even the socail effects of increased security awearness. Otherwise this is going to decend and end up locked thread.
