There's about 40 quid between XP home and XP Pro. 40 difference for most components of a computer can usually bring a noticable performance increase, so my question is what is better with XP pro that deserves 40 quid?

try joining an XP Home machine to a domain or using offline files with it.
XP Home is fine for home use , but as its name suggests its not designed for corporate use.
Some people like to use offline files and a few of the more technical features, so pro would be a better choice for them.
here is a more consise list for you.

Thankyou, that was very helpful
Assuming multi-processor = multiple processor sockets, then home is probably the right one for me again. As long as I can run dual core single processor on home.
that should be the case. - I run XP home on my home machines , but I wouldn't consider letting it near any of my work system.

Don't forget XP MCE 2005 (£74 OEM from Scan) - it's basically XP Pro with extra bits but cheaper than XP Pro!
if you dont want to join it to a domain ( after building ) then MCE is a good way of getting the best of both worlds.

there is a way after building too ....Originally Posted by Moby-Dick
Wow I'd not thought about MCE.. I kind of feared that was actually a cut down version of home.
