    Ghost Question!

    Hi chaps..

Just a quick question… I have a new hard disk drive and I wanted to ghost a back up of a windows 98 machine onto it for safety (work related) and I just wanted to know if I need to format the new hard disk, when the ‘elonex man’ has come out in the past to do repairs he always seems to ghost onto a brand new hard drive and I can’t ever remember him formatting the drive first….

    Thanks Big Guy...

You don't need to format it.
Ghost will copy the image straight onto it, and if the new drive is bigger, you should have (depending on your version of ghost) the option to include the extra space as part of the image, or leave ot as a separate partition.

    Very odd.....

You trying to start it from within the windows GUI or from the good old fashioned DOS disk?

From within the GUI windows is probably not seeing the drive as it's not formatted. The DOS disk should see the drive as unformatted and copy the partition, lock, stock and barrell, across.

The file should be .gho extension and can be done by partition or just image itself. I used to ghost the system as a image file in a drive with many partitions. Otherwise, if you ghost the system as a partition, you will copy the whole system into destination drive or partition. Search the file with gho file first.

type in "fdisk" at the command prompt after booting off a bootdisk.
See www.bootdisk.com and grab one from there.
You can then make different partitions for the drive, and format them with "format [drive name]" if needed.
