Best Linux Distribution

As title, I need a distribution of linux for home use. Since 2 years ago I use RedHat 9 at home, but now there's so much choice.

There's:
* Redhat x
* Fedora Core 3 and 4 (differences?)
* Suse
* Others

Could anyone please tell me what the differences are and if possible a list of the packages/programs within each distribution?

All the packages etc will be more or less the same. If its ease of use youre after id go for suse or ubuntu, debian after that. Red hat is good, but i dont really know the directory structure that well hence dont use it (for the record i have debian installed, used to be gentoo, but i reall cba with it, you dont get any more control, things just take longer.)

Just where it puts al the config files and everything. That along with the fact that i dont particularly want gnome on my computer, cos its a steaming pile of crap, xfce 4tW!

With those that you mentioned, what window manager do you get with them i.e. KDE, GNOME, AnotherLevelUp, WindowMaker etc.

Suse defaults to kde i think, ubuntu is gnome debian is pretty much whatever you want, like i said, i use xfce, but its pretty easy to use whatever you like.

If youre willing to learn a bit and arent scared of a command prompt or not having a prettified installer then get debian.

I use Debian - as said, you can use whatever you want with it - Gnome, KDE, Fluxbox, XFCE... It's relatively simple to set up and run so long as you don't mind a relatively small learning curve and setting things up yourself.

If you want something easier, I've found Ubuntu 5.10 and Fedora Core 4 to simple and work well. SUSE 10.0 also got good reviews, although I've never tried it.

As for the 'best' Linux distribution - I think that's a case of each to their own.

Like Mike said, no best solution, just plenty of veriety That's the joy of Linux. I've used SuSE for day to day business for yonks, also loving Xandros & Vector Linux.

Try linuxiso.org, it's where I started. Has download links for what seems to be all of the major distros.

hearteningly, that seems to be the consensus - "i use foo, but it's personal taste"

Still use Red Hat 9 - and Gnome - does it for me... Really a question of doing the research and deciding what is best for you - potential applications, size of the distro, update methods etc. Like so many "What is best..." or "Recommend me a.." it all comes down to user requirements.

It's a bit like "Recommend me the best car..." Has to be something like a Bentley for luxury, Ferrari for road holding, Peugeot 806 for carrying capacity, Renaukt Clio for value for money, any old 200 quid banger for cheap motoring. All ythe best - for the job you want them to do and with such open ended (ie non) specifications... (*puts soap box away*)

(And guys - that was just an example - not an attempt to divert the thread onto the relative merits of cars... )

Okay, here's a shorter question:

Which distributions currently support the latest hardware as I have noticed people asking for ADSl modem, graphics card drivers. This distro would be perfect as I hope to not have to upgrade for another 2 years or so.
