    Problem

I have just installed some new Geil ram. The only way i could get the system to boot was to do a cmos reset, otherwise it said \windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt. I got into XP Home SP2 and everything was fine. But, when i reboot it comes up with the same message and i have to clear the cmos to start up. The error message and stuff i have found online says that i should try and repair it but i just get an error message when the setup is loading the drivers.

I have found two Microsoft articles on the subject:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307545

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822705

but i do really need some help on those!

    Thanks.

Does the system behave normally if yoiu remove the RAM (ie restore everything as it was)? If so I would suggest that the RAM is faulty or incompatible with the Mobo.

Before i tryed resetting the cmos i tryed it with the ram i had before and it worked fine. But, after a cmos reset the ram seems fine, if it was incompatable it would just not work?

What does this file which is mucked up do?

I'm not sure which file it isn't loading - the registry is spread across several. But there is clearly some incompatability. If the System works OK in the state it was in before you added or replaced the RAM, but doesn't afterwards - it is a pretty clear indication that it is a hardware problem. If you have tinkered with the bios settings to overclock the system, then clearing the CMSO memory to remove those settings makes sense, but that should only be a one off process. So, at the risk of repetition, restore the hardware to it's prvious know working state and check that it will still work normally.
