XP_64 install CD - failing on certain files.

I'm currently trying to reinstall XP_64 on a machine.

on the install, I'm getting a warning that it cannot copy 1 of 3 files (randomly selectes one each install attempt) at the "copying your setup files" point of the install.

the files are

processor.sys
imapi.sys
oea.sys

because its one of these 3 files each time, it led me to believe that the cd was damaged, however this worked on a totally different machine fine, and sometimes processor.sys gets copied ok, other times not.

it says "press return to retry" but when I press return it doesn't even sping the cdrom drive back up, so I don't see how its "retrying"

seen this before ?

When you get the error, eject the CD and put it in again. retry. Sometimes works. Ususlly not though. Have you tried installing it using a different CD drive?

Nearly all copying errors ive seen at setup stage at hardware related.
Have you run memtest / ect.. to check the system is stable ?

Most commonly I encounter "problem copying file" messages from CDs when the disc was written at too high a speed for the current drive, or the drive itself is unhappy (dirty/broken).

Because of this, I always burn discs at the slowest speed (or at least 1 notch under the maximum speed the disc & player both say they support).

Other times I have seen this type of message, given its random nature, it has been:
- CPU fan not seated correctly
- dodgy RAM
- IDE cable not perfectly seated in the hard disk
- flaky CD-ROM drive

To test in your position I would be tempted to swap the CD drives between the 2 machines, as you know it works on one.

used 3 different cdroms - same problem
this is an origional XP_64 cd so not a burnt copy
this PC has passed memtest and all that gubbins
This PC runs XP32 pro without issue
This PC runs various other OS's without issue.

Hmm, is there any extraneous expansion card installed in the machine which XP x64 might be objecting to, or a USB device connected during installation?

It sounds as if it might be a chipset driver that could be unhappy.

After checking for BIOS firmware updates, I would go through the BIOS and disable anything non-essential - maybe select the "fail safe defaults" option to tune down the memory timings, etc. before trying again.

this machine has had XP_64 on before - I made a mess of the boot.ini file though (infact paul it was you who suggested a re-install, I've finally gotten around to it)

the only "unusual device" in this machine is a fully supported LSI SCSI card with a HP dds drive on the end of it.

but for the purpose of this thread I'll remove it and try it again.

ok - yanked tons of stuff out so its pretty much

1.) nvidia gfx card
2.) 2 x ide disks in flat disk config (no raid)
3.) 2 x raptor satas in flat disk config (no raid)
4.) 2 x Plextor IDE dvd rw-r drives
5.) 2x 1gig crucial balistix ram in dual channel config
This is an AV8 Deluxe Board with an FX55 cpu.

I've taken the Dat drive / scsi card out.

Ran a couple of complete passes of memtest - all passed fine.

I've tried using the Asus AV8 Sata Raid driver for Amd64 (for some reason they have removed all stable drivers for this from their website, and only have betas 4.0c)
I've tried going direct to VIA getting the latest stable sata Raid driver for AMD64.

Both times XP64 can see the disks at install and allow me to create and format a partition, then start the install.

Now at copying files time it complains about

olesetup
msshell
msapi

(I've tried skipping these files and I know the install will fail to see how far it goes)

it continues on, complains about mshtml then blue screens complaining about IRQ

frustrating as I don't believe this CD is bad as its been used on this very same computer before.

The machine seems very stable and I can find no errors.

Is the system overclocked at all?

Also tried installing the OS with only one stick of memory in?

Just a suggestion as i've had to do this once installing XP Pro, put the 2nd stick in afterwards & all was fine.

system is totally default, no overclocking at all.

I'll try removing a stick of ram for arguments sake, but I'd be surprised if this was the problem as this media has installed fine on this machine before.

This media is also now failing to boot another machine.

What I maybe interested in trying (legality permitting) is if someone could make me an ISO of their X86_64 XP pro CD and allow me to burn a copy to actually just remove the question of the meida being a problem. I have legit license keys so I'd have need for thatjust physical media. Paul Adams, could you advise if this is an acceptable MS practice.

Try removing one of the DVD drives so there is only 1 in the system.

If you have a legit licence, and a legit disc, then I would phone microsoft and tell them that you have a faulty install disc, and ask for a replacement.

From what I have heard, they will ask you your licence number, and get you to describe the CD, but once you have done that they are usualy happy to post you a replacement without charging you. After all it is hardly in their interests for ISOs of their install disc to be floating around the net.

Unfortunately not. All I can suggest that is that go to microsoft uk and look arround for support. I would expect to spend a while listening to hold music.

Only second hand I am afraid. I was told about it by the BOFH at a prevous company I worked at.
