    Ubuntu 5.10 + Notebook PC

It was going alright actually, and I'm pretty sure I can't screw up since I've only been installing packages from the apt-get list (I've added the unsupported respositries etc). I am however having 2 problems:

    1. ATi Radeon 9700 - I installed the xorg-driver-fglrx and xserver-xorg-driver-ati from Synaptic, they installed without error. However, fireglcontrol panel complains that something isn't set up correctly in X11, and I'm pretty sure, judging by the GL screensavers, that my hardware isn't actually being used. Not sure why it wasn't set up nice and automatically when I got the drivers, but any ideas to get it working are good ones.
    2. Notebook Battery. Basically it thinks I'm running off AC all the time (SpeedStep is working, APM is installed). I have some kind of Sanyo "Smart Battery", installed a few battery-related packages, but still my machine thinks it's running off AC with no battery installed. Any tips to get this detected are welcomed.

    Cheers

you need to get the ati kernel module loading on boot (e.g. "echo fglrx >> /etc/modules"), and tell xorg to use the ati driver (e.g. "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg)

no idea on the battery front though, my dell's battery life is shown fine

What kind of laptop is it? I recently installed on a Dell Inspiron but the battery worked great.
Next step is to try on my iBook G4.
