    Genealogy and photo archiving

ok, i'm looking for two pieces of software that in an ideal world would be integrated.

First off i'd quite like to get some genealogy (family trees) software for my mum. She is quite into our families history and i'm pretty interested too, but have no idea what would be good software.

Last night while round at my parents we ended up going through a bunch of old photos, many were me grannys. I had the idea of scanning them all in and tagging them so we don't forget who a lot of the people are. Also some of them are getting a bit tattered (surprisingly most are in good condition though). I've seen one server based software that you could draw shapes over objects and tag those shapes so it would be easy to identify people in the photos.

It would be very cool if there was something that integrated all this inot one app (client or server based doesn't really matter, but not so keen on online ony apps), so you could view a photo and then switch to that persons details in the family tree or vice versa.

Anyone got any suggestions of software? or indeed the best places to look for this kind of thing. Obviously an opensource app is preferable, but i have no problems paying for something if it does what i am looking for.

    thanks for any suggestions.

Erm often its getting access to the genealogy databases you pay for. Our digitised cenus records in the UK only seam to be available for cost. I've not searched this, only my mum has but she has been getting computer literate lately.

As for tagging images etc. I was teaching mum how to use access database to store things.

My mother does a lot of familly tree stuff, she uses an app called familly tree maker, this allows you to add photos. There appears to be a file structure that allows info to be moved between apps, so people can send each other bits of tree to add from a range of apps. The 1901 census is free to access, the mormons website is one of the best around (think its something like famillysearch.org), genes reunited is also good.

I already use Picasa for all my photos i take, but it is lacking in the tagging department. Basically you can't, all you can do is add a label or comment. The adobe photo album thingy is quite good, but doesn't have lossless image manipulation (Picassa doesn't alter your photo, it just saves the process changes you made and applies them next time you view it). Perhaps v3 will add more of these features.
