I was on Skype to EvilWeevil last night and we wondered what Gmail is coded in. It's a bit like the hexus main site and parts of this forum where it's all seemless when clicking on some buttons no loading of pages, a bit like one huge flash app. but not iykwim.

The only difference is Java runs slightly faster, its no wonder people mix the two up

Java is not related to Javascript and if anything Java is slower than javascript.

Google Maps also uses AJAX, it basically allows a web page to make calls to server side applications such as databases using the XMLHTTP engine built into most of the browsers so instead of having to reload a page to update something you use javascript to call the server side and then dynamically update the page. There are some very impressive uses of AJAX out there, and some that are just for show and not really functional in a similar vein to a lot of Flash sites
