You could try going to http://www.whatismyip.com to check the live IP you are using. It could be that AOL are using either DNAT or a transparent proxy.

Keep pluging away with the port forwarding it'll be worth it

Yep make sure you pass the shields up test or you might still have some nasties lurking or be open to more.

Personally I wouldn't spend money on anti-spyware software, just do a fresh install of windows and take care with what software you use and install.

If other people use your computer then of course they are a weak spot if they aren't streetwise when it comes to the internet :/

MS anti spyware is also more than enough for a lot of people (which is free)

and with OneCare looming (which is going to be free.... until the anti trust people complain) its really not worth spending money on it.

So dont spend money on antispyware but do on antivirus? What about a firewall? Pay for or is free fine? I do have a netgear router with a firewall so ill check that out. The problem i have at the moment is that my parents have to use my rig and running in limeted user mode makes some programs not work. I think ill set thier account back to non admin and see how it goes, and use that as my surfing account.

Thats the annoying thing about windows security, some apps will only run with admin privs - I tried to set up a PC with a restricted account for my little sis but she needed administrator priveleges to even play games!

At work they tried to restrict us and discovered some of the apps we need wouldnt run, lol.

You can run fine with no virus checkers or firewall (as long as you are NATted behind a router) but only if you know not to download/run dodgy things however you want them if others are using your PC.

AVG is decent and free anti virus but others have their own preferences.

If your on XP you can have some of the great new vista features. Security tokens.

With this you can run programs as administrator, and restrict them a bit more.

Fundimentally people have been writing very sloppy code (and this really isn;t new in games market). But there are work arounds (such as making the shortcut for the game run it as a different user, then using a tool like DropMyRights to run the game) Its not dead simple thou.

The game she wanted to play was a microsoft game, I tried everything but nothing worked and according to MS it requires administrator privs to run. Sloppy coding indeed!

MS are a games publisher, rather than developer, which confuses poeple imo.

Try complaining, but until then, use Run As... (set it up by default in the shortcut).

"run as" doesnt work for this - if it did it would be mentioned in the MS KB article rather than their solution of creating an account with admin privs and signing in with it. Anyway I dont want to derail this thread

The program i was refering to is EMCO photo resizer, it does not work without being admin (it even lists "i am not an admin" in the list of reasons why i uninstalled!). So i uninstalled it but with one problem, what do i use instead?

I need a free photo file size resizer.

    thanks

a simple resiser, its about 10 lines of code in .net 2.0

no image resiser should need admin privs.

To set-up a limited account in XP Home, go to control panel and you should find User Accounts in there (under the classic view). you can really only create two types of accounts - admin and limited. i've looked for ways to customise what permissions each type of account has, but haven't found any. if anyone useing home has been able to do this, would love to know how...
