    Windows XP Pro Re-install

With all my *.DLL files deciding to wander off (see: http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=62856) and leaving errors for stuff running riot I decided it was time to do a reinstall. Wanted to try and keep everything the same so I selected install then it dectected current install and gave option to repair (this is the repair option not the repair with console option). Went along with this hoping it would mean not having to do a complete wipe yet would correct the problems....

These errors came up (LARGE IMAGES NOT FOR 56k):

Any ideas why? I'm now going to do a complete clean install, but would be nice to know why happened.

    Thanks

You booted of the XP CD and selected to repair the existing install and got those errors during the repair?
Did you try an "in-place upgrade" at all?

Microsoft KB on repair vs in-place upgrade for XP

The other option is to take a system state backup, then do a parallel installation (e.g. to C:\WINXP or similar) and try to restore into it - this would have the file system of a clean install but the registry hive of your current setup.
If that works then you could edit the BOOT.INI to remove the old OS and delete the old Windows folder.

Of course, if a clean install is possible then it's probably preferable - and if you are going to do it then it would be worth slipstreaming SP2 and the hotfixes onto a new CD.
(To see which hotfixes are installed post-SP2, just check in Add/Remove Programs with "show updates" enabled - then you can go to the relevant KB on support.microsoft.com and download for XP so you are ready to integrate.)

Paul, Hexus would be at a great loss without your knowledge.

Prepared long reply on mums computer when this re-installing hers shutdown when using

Totally forgot about parallel installs, also think of them as a bit mucky (not that my patched repair install isn't!).

    Useful link cheers.

Indeedy, I've been meaning to do a slipstreamed disk for some time now. Never sure whether it's worth it just slipstreaming updates without drivers and some apps!

    Running clean now

    Thanks
